Agents of Freedom

As the year draws to a close and we begin to seek the face of God on what will be our theme for 2019, God still wants us to look at our theme for this year from another perspective. Truly, 2018 has been our year of complete freedom in Christ. Each and every one of us has experienced freedom in many areas of our lives. However, it is not enough to have experienced freedom in Christ; He also desires that we become agents of freedom. That is, becoming instruments of freedom in the hand of our God to bring about the liberation of others from bondage of sin, sickness, pain, poverty, emotional disorder and other limitations that have held them bound. Our text gives us insight on how to do this. In our text, three important issues could be identified, the crippled man, his environment or location and John and Peter, whom the Lord used to set the man free and bring about his healing. Let’s look closely at each of these three things.

The Crippled Man (vv. 2-3&5) – The man was born crippled and had been in such a situation for about 40 years. His condition, though not of his own making, has made him to be limited physically, spiritually, emotionally, economically, socially and religiously. Thus, he has been in bondage for a long period of time which has made him to resign to fate and live a life of perpetual dependency on people.

His location and the environment (v.2) – He had made the Temple to be his permanent place of abode, permanently residing at the beautiful gate, one of the 9 gates (entrances) to the Temple. His life was everything but beautiful. Thousands of worshippers who daily throng the Temple using the gate never for once had pity on him and helped him with a new and better life, except to throw a few coins at him which was never enough to raise him from his pitiable situation.

Peter and John, the Man’s Benefactor (vv.1, 4, 6-7) – They were ordinary men, unlearned and insignificant, except that they were disciples of Jesus (4:13). They were committed to their Lord in a life of devotion and prayers, and also committed to making a difference in people’s lives. They gave attention to the man, though they did not have money but what they had was much more than money. They gave him healing through the name of Jesus Christ, their Master. Yet, there was something significant they did after praying for the man to be healed in the name of Jesus: they took the man by the right hand and helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong!

There are many crippled people around us, seeking for people that will not only pray but hold their hands up so that they can stand in life. True Christians hold the lever in their hands by which the world can be lifted up. What are the qualities of those that God can use as a lever and agents of freedom? 1. Those who know and are committed to their Lord 2. Those who are conscious of their environment and people around them 3. Those who are loving and caring 4. Those who are not judgemental. 5. Those who are ready to give what they have. Can the Lord depend on you to be an agent of change and freedom? Talk to the Lord.
