To God be the glory for the privilege given to us all to witness the year 2018 Fathers’ Day anniversary. May He count us worthy to witness many more in complete freedom and strength in Jesus’ name. Our focus for this year is ‘Spiritual Intimacy’ especially as it relates to Christian couples. Intimacy is closeness in a relationship, gained by revealing one’s true self to another person.
It also means ‘an affectionate bond characterized by mutual care, responsibility, trust, open communication of feelings and unrestricted interchange of information’.

In considering this topic, it is important to emphasize that God is the author of Intimacy, which is a natural by-product of Love, a quality personified by God Himself. Hence, any aspiration for intimacy outside of God will only result in frustration and disappointment; and because God is Love, genuine intimacy can only be an ‘overflow’ of our intimacy with God.

The innumerable blessings of intimacy with God include (a.)Rest from vain labour & vicissitudes of life-Matt. 29:11,Ps.127:1-2 (b.)Access to divine revelations-Mark 4:11(c.)Access to divine provisions-Ps.23:1-2,Matt.6:33 (d.)Divine protection-Ps.23:4-5,Ps. 91:1 (e.)Proper order of priorities-Luke 10:41-42.
Note: Genuine intimacy cannot be hidden or suppressed. Wherever it truly exists, it shows. (2Sam.6v14-23).

As it relates to couples, Spiritual Intimacy is being able to share your spiritual self, find this reciprocated, and have a sense of union with your spouse. It is a conscious effort by couples to be close to God, seek His guidance and submit to His direction for their lives. It is the willingness to honour and allow God’s Word to be the final arbiter on every issue, regardless of its significance. It is learning to see marriage as a spiritual adventure premised on absolute trust in God and it is also the willingness to enthrone Jesus as the Lord of their lives.

Ingredients of a Spiritually intimate relationship include (a.) Spiritual agreement -2Cor.6v14-15, Amos 3v3 (b.) Honesty with yourself, with God and with your Spouse-Gen.2:24-25 (c.) Appreciation of God’s purpose for your spouse’s life -Gen.2:18,20; Prov.18:22 (d.) Hard work i.e. unwavering commitment to the pursuit of God as individuals and as a Couple-Gen.25:21-22 (e.) Attention i.e. seizing every available opportunity to spend quality time with your spouse, knowing that life itself is fleeting-Ecc. 9:9, Gen.26:8 (f.) Sacrifice -Eph.5:25-29, Phil.2v3-4,1Cor.13:4-7.

In the pursuit of Spiritual Intimacy amongst couples, it is important to identify and consciously work towards overcoming certain factors that constitute hindrances. Such include Laziness/Fatigue, Distractions, Individual differences or differences in occupational schedules and sheer Ignorance.

As challenging as the pursuit of Spiritual Intimacy may be for Christian couples today, its benefits cannot be overemphasized and it remains the cornerstone upon which any other form of intimacy is built.
Happy Fathers’ Day!
