Unity of the Spirit

Every believers’ true calling is a call to servanthood. (1 Peter 2:16 and 1 Cor. 4: 1-2). More often than not, the call to servanthood will often require the complement of other believers for the same purpose (Romans 12:5). Every believers’ true calling is a call to servanthood. (1 Peter 2:16 and 1 Cor. 4: 1-2). More often than not, the call to servanthood will often require the complement of other believers for the same purpose (Romans 12:5). Jesus Christ in his ministry has shown us perfect example of the character, mind-set, attitude and behaviour a true servant of God should possess. This he did by living in complete unity with God the Father.

In our text, Ephesians 4: 2, Paul outlines four qualities that should characterise the kind of services, members of a Spirit-driven Church should engage in. These are
1) Humility in service
2) Patient in service
3) Gentleness in service
4) Love in service

Firstly, when we show humility in our service, we become less self-conscious (Philippians 2:7) and more Spirit conscious. A humble servant sees the bigger picture of God enhancing his work in others through him (John 13:1-4).

Secondly, servants of God ought to be patient with one another, gentle in courtesy of speech (Ephesians 4:29), slow to anger but quick to reconcile (2 Timothy 2:24). All these should characterise our service.

Thirdly, in our service, we must be gentle. To be gentle is to be kind and tender towards each other. To gently accept one another’s fault and short comings without taking offence or being judgemental.

Fourthly, our service must be done in love and by love. This we can do by the unlimited giving of ourselves to the fulfilment of God's purpose for others. Love does not put a limit to what God can do through you to achieve his purpose (John 15: 3).

To become worthy servants of God will entail a sincere conscious effort of responding to the life of God in us. Everything needed for us to live in oneness and unity with God in heart and mind has been granted freely unto us by Jesus through his death and resurrection (Romans 8:10). However, experiencing the manifestation of the life of the Spirit depends on our willingness to respond in faithful devotion to serve Him, which can be done in the following ways:

  1. Faithful obedience to God's word.
  2. Living in a constant fellowship with the spirit through prayer and study of His word.
  3. Separation from all forms of worldliness, temptations and lusts, and living in purity of thought, action and speech.
  4. Total reliance on God's guidance and choosing to follow His desires only.

Only with these can we have an acceptable service to the Lord as His children and called servants.
