The sin of disobedience to God creates a gulf between the sinner and God that must be removed if the blessings of God would be experienced. People normally disobey God because they think that their interests are better served by choosing to do their own will or the will of others. The Israelites had routinely disobeyed the commands of Word right from the time of their forefathers and this had prevented them from experiencing the blessings of God.

Having denounced the dishonourable conduct of the Israelites in relation to Him, God went on to rebuke their treacherous behaviour towards one another in marriage and family life. This should not be a surprising development. It cannot be expected that he who is false to his God should be true to his fellow man.

In the Book of Malachi, God not only expressed His displeasure with the worship and sacrifices of Israel, but He also held the priests responsible for their dishonourable and contemptuous behaviour. He then went to a great length to call them to order. We have much to learn from how He did this because a similar situation is prevalent in the Christian church today. The ineffectiveness of the church in representing God in the world today can be attributed to the failure of church leaders in leading their congregations aright.

One of the duties enjoined upon all His people by God is that of worshipping Him. Unfortunately, the Jews of Malachi’s day failed to give to God the worship that He deserved. What they offered to God was dishonouring to His person and profaning to His name. What was true of the Jews at that time is also true of believers in Christ today.

One of the essentials to grasping our purpose in life or to be truly committed to living for God is to understand God’s great love. This understanding must be more than a vague concept of God’s love for all people. Rather, each one of us must have a deep-seated experience of God’s love. We must realize that God loves and deeply cares for us individually, that He wants only the best for each person. For that reason, God cares immeasurably about what we do and how we live.
