Christmas is a unique festive season. One of its unique features is exchange of gifts. Amazingly, God initiated this feature by giving mankind the gift of His only begotten son, Jesus Christ. According to dictionary definition, gift is something given willingly to someone without payment. While a giver gives a gift, a receiver is expected to receive the gift in other to appropriate and enjoy its full benefits. However, not all gifts are beneficial to a receiver and not all gifts should be accepted. This is unlike God and His gift. Many and valuable are the gifts which we have received from Him, but of them all, there is none so valuable as the gift of His Son, the gift above all other gifts. No wonder, out text describes it as an unspeakable (indescribable) gift. Why is God’s gift described as unspeakable? What does this mean? A closer look at our passage and other passages of the scripture shed light on this and reveal some uniqueness of God’s gift.

Blasphemy is impious or profane speaking against God. It is contempt or indignity offered to God. Any word or action that is contrary to the nature and character of God as revealed in the Bible is blasphemous. Blasphemy was actively indulged in by the Israelites in the days of Prophet Malachi. They spoke against God as their fathers did in the wilderness (Psa. 78:19).

The sin of disobedience to God creates a gulf between the sinner and God that must be removed if the blessings of God would be experienced. People normally disobey God because they think that their interests are better served by choosing to do their own will or the will of others. The Israelites had routinely disobeyed the commands of Word right from the time of their forefathers and this had prevented them from experiencing the blessings of God.
