About his call into the pastorate of Good News Baptist Church (formerly Adelabu Street Baptist Church), and his experience in the early years of his ministry, Rev. Ilupeju has the following to share:

My call into the Pastorate of this Church began one hot afternoon in January 1988 when I was summoned by the Rev. Prof. Osadolor Imasogie into his office to meet with Deacon & Mrs. G. O. Onosode. They had come to the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary, Ogbomoso, in search of a Pastor for the Church which they founded and which they had led for about four years at that time. After intimating me with the purpose of their coming which was to find out my willingness or otherwise to Pastor the Church, I was invited to visit the Church on Sunday, February 21, 1988. I honoured the invitation, and after the service in which I preached the sermon, I was asked to visit again on Sunday, March 27, which was Palm Sunday. This second visit was followed with a formal letter of call dated 6th April, 1988. I replied to this letter on 12th April, 1988. A second letter detailing my conditions of service was received a few days to my graduation that took place on Saturday, June 4, 1988.

I resumed my ministry in Adelabu Street Baptist Church, as the Church was then called, on Friday, July 1, 1988. On that day, I reported for duty at 44, Adelabu Street, Surulere, where the Church had been meeting since its establishment on Wednesday, February 1, 1984. Since the Church had not yet provided an accommodation for me, I used to come to work from my family house at 15, Olasimbo Street, Onike,Yaba. My office was a corner of the living room of 44, Adelabu Street which gave me a good view of the gate and was a vantage point for seeing those who came to see me for counseling.
